Angostura® 1919 is a specially blended multiple award winning rum, which celebrates a very particular date in the development of the rum industry in Trinidad & Tobago, as well as the Caribbean.
After a fire in 1932, which destroyed the Government Rum Bond, the master blender of Fernandes Distillers, J.B. Fernandes, bought the charred casks, only to discover they had been filled in the year 1919. The prized rum was skillfully blended and called “1919 Aged Rum.”
Angostura rum brings the natural colour and richness of Trinidad and Tobago's carnival spirit to all drinking occasions. Angostura 5 year old golden rum is a blend of rums aged in charred American oak barrels for between five and eight years. This is an energetic and flavourful rum that is exceptionally smooth. Angostura produces a range of rums that also include Angostura 1824 Rum, Angostura 1919, Angostura 7 Year Old Dark Rum and Angostura Reserva Rum.
A blend of light and heavy rums distilled in Angostura's five-column continuous still. The rum is aged in American Oak Bourbon barrels for between seven and ten years. After ageing, the rum is lightly filtered through charcoal to remove impurities, but not so much as to alter the inherently rich flavour or the dark, wood induced. After blending it is returned to the barrel to allow the blend to marry. This silky smooth rum comes into its own after a minute or so in the glass and should be first sampled neat to allow the rum to reveal its true characteristics and provenance. Angostura 7 yr old has a pleasing dark amber hue. It is a powerful, robust and flavoursome rum. On the nose it has subtle flutterings of treacle, chocolate and a gentle smokiness, whilst on the palate it is rich, intense and powerful, with a tantalizing hint of burnt spice.
A masterpiece of oak aging. All Appleton Estate aged rums adhere to Scottish-English law, which means that all the rums contained in the blend must reflect, at a minimum, the specific age noted on the bottle. Every drop of Appleton Estate 12 Year Old is aged a minimum of 12 years. This lengthy aging in small oak casks creates a full-bodied sipping rum...comparable to the finest X.O cognacs.
